Ghana polls: Media a threat to Ghana’s peace – Peace Council

The National Peace Council has cautioned the media to act professionally in the discharge of its duties to prevent plunging the country into chaos during the 2016 elections. The National Peace Council made the statement during an interaction with the media in the Eastern region on Thursday under the theme: “Cooperation for Peace: The Ghana Agenda for 2016 Violent free Election". Speaking at the forum, the Eastern regional Chairman of the Peace Council, Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel G.L Twum-Baah, said the media can be a threat to the Peace of the country as the nation heads toward the November polls.

"The Council finds it worrying that pockets of electoral violence erupt in the region as a result of media misrepresentation of facts. “The Media can be a threat to the peace of the nation if practitioners collaborate with people seeking unfair advantage through unjust means. This is generally the concern of the peace council"

Rt. Rev. Twum-Baah charged the media to be circumspect before during and after the 2016 general elections. The Deputy Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Gabriel Dei said the acrimonies and agitations surrounding the work of the EC are as a result of mistrust by politicians but worried that the media is exacerbating the issue.
