South Africa: SANBS changes donor criteria over Zika virus

MBOMBELA – The Zika virus is not endemic to South Africa, but the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is taking note and has adjusted its donor criteria. SANBS announced that, in an effort to proactively ensure no blood recipients are exposed to the Zika virus, blood donors who travelled to certain countries will not be allowed to donate blood within 28 days of returning to South Africa.

Kumasi: Fire Destroys 15-bedroom house at Makro

 
A 15-bedroom compound house at Makro Junction a suburb of the Kumasi Metropolis has been ravaged by fire. The cause of the fire is not immediately known according to Ultimate Fm’s Isaac Justice Bediako who was at the scene of the incident. According to him, before fire fighters could arrive the inferno had wreaked havoc to the belongings of occupants who have equally been rendered homeless. The latest incident comes barely 24-hours after the 3rd floor of Yagoala Hotel in Kumasi belonging to renowned football legend Anthony Yeboah caught fire destroying seats in the conference room and other fittings.

Nigeria's deputy High Commissioner to Ghana involved in accident

Reports say the deputy Nigeria High Commissioner to Ghana Alhaji Osman Nijima has been involved in a car crash at a village near the Brong Ahafo region. Alhaji Nijima was on his way to the Northern region to attend the ongoing International Trade Fair in Tamale.

The cause of the accident is, however, not known but  President John Mahama has dispatched the mayor of Tamale Hanan Jundaadow and the former Northern regional Minister Mohammed Limuna to the crash site. Alhaji Nijima was traveling to Tamale on the invitation of President Mahama, who joined the Trade Fair exhibition today. It is also not known if the deputy High Commissioner sustained some injuries.

76 Hungry Boko Haram Members Surrender To Nigerian Military

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Dozens of emaciated-looking Boko Haram members begging for food have surrendered in northeast Nigeria, the military and a civilian self-defense fighter said Wednesday. Seventy-six people including children and women gave themselves up to soldiers last Saturday in Gwoza, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Maiduguri, according to a senior officer. All are being detained at military headquarters in Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and currently the command center of the war against the Islamic extremists, according to the officer.
