Nigeria under-23 team won the consolation bronze of the Africa Games yesterday after beating hosts Congo 5-3 after a penalty shootout. Siasia Siasia Congo and Nigeria were tipped to play in the final, but they suffered shock defeats to Senegal and Burkina Faso respectively. In the third place play offs yesterday, chances were hard to come by, the only one that came the way of the Under-23 Eagles was wasted by Junior Ajayi; that has been the bane of the team in the competition. Full score was goalless and it was left for goalkeeper Daniel Emmanuel to prove his worth. He denied the Congolese once, while Nigerian shooters Daniel Etor, Sodiq Atanda, Kingsley Sokari, Christian Pyagbara and Obanor Ehor made no mistake with their kicks. “Bronze is better than nothing. We came here with the aim of winning the gold, but that didn’t happen. “We have learnt some useful lessons and for sure we will work on those before the Olympic qualifying tournament,” said coach Samson Siasia.
