Kenya: Stray lion spotted along Mombasa road injures man in Nairobi

A stray lion that escaped from Nairobi National Park injured an elderly man on Friday. The lion was sighted in the morning near City Cabanas on Mombasa Road. A video posted to social media showed the black-maned lion running along the highway as motorists hoot and shout.

A Romanian MP will serve two years behind bars for bribing his electorate with fried chicken. The US military has restricted the travel of its officers to five West African countries including Ghana over fears of terror attacks, Reuters has reported. Limited voters’ registration exercise in limbo; EC cashstrapped

The April limited voters’ registration exercise may be postponed because the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is lacking the funding for the exercise which is precursor to the November 7 polls. Information available indicates that the Ministry of Finance is yet to make releases to the EC to undertake that crucial national exercise.

Briamah Kamoko, boxer and notorious street fighter aka Bukom Banku, has been detained after three ladies lodged a complaint of assault against him. The 38-year-old Cruiserweight champion was detained Tuesday by the Greater Accra Regional police.

He is said to have assaulted the ladies after a confrontation. Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, ASP Afia Tengey, says the boxer’s detention is pending further investigations into allegations against him. One of the victims, Eunice Lamptey, suffered bruises on parts of her body as did the other two complainants. They told police Bukum Banku beat them up last Saturday. The boxer is expected to be arraigned before court after investigations.

Chief Inspector Michael Asamoah (Rtd), a former Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police Service has blamed the influx of half-baked and uneducated policemen in the service on politicians. According to Chief the falling standard of the police service is because recruitment is now “job for the boys”.

Ghana: Police officers accuse Commander of taking bribes from drug barons

The Akim Oda Divisional Police Commander in the Eastern region has been accused by his subordinate Police officers of taking bribes from drug barons. The Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Ebenezer Ampofo allegedly took bribes from two drug dealers arrested with 50 wrappers of a substance believed to be cocaine.

Mr. Moses Foh-Amoaning, the Executive Secretary and Spokesperson for the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, has said homosexuals do not have any rights, insisting the act is a criminal offense. He explained that the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights did not state any rights for homosexuals and emphasized that Ghana’s 1992 constitution is also explicitly clear on Human Rights provisions and therefore homosexuals cannot claim any rights under it. “Why is polygamy a criminal offence in the United States, but it is normal in Ghana, so what right has anyone got to tell us not to criminalize homosexuality. He said there was no scientific, theological and legal or any psychiatric basis for homosexuality and for that matter Africa and the rest of the World must be courageous enough to speak against it.

The bodies of a set of new-born twins have been discovered at Sreso-Adegya in the Ashanti Region. The bodies were found at a communal waste disposal point by a worker at the site. The unit committee chair for the area, Mama Vida, who spoke with Accra News’ Cantona, said at about 11am, the refuse attendant in the town was on the site when he heard someone throw rubbish in a polythene bag into the garbage container.

Ilorin - An Ilorin High Court on Monday sentenced Kwara State native to death by hanging due to his decapitation of a 9-year-old boy. The court found the suspect, Ahmed Abdullahi, guilty of beheading Hamidu Sanda in a bush at Amberi Village, Iso Wara, near Ajase-Po in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara, on April 1, 2009.

A United States judge on Monday handed down a 40-year sentence to a former Christian missionary previously found guilty of raping children at a Kenyan orphanage. "These were heinous crimes committed on the most vulnerable victims," Judge David Russell declared in imposing the sentence. "He was their worst nightmare come true," the judge added in regard to Matthew Lane Durham, 21, who had claimed he was possessed by an "inner demon." Prosecutors said Mr Durham carried out the attacks during a 33-day period in 2014 while serving as a volunteer at the Upendo Children's Home in Juja. Five of the abused children travelled last year from Kenya along with orphanage officials to testify at Mr Durham's trial.

THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has introduced marker pens with ineradicable ink to mark voters during elections, replacing the finger-dipping method as part of a new voting system proposed to curb double voting. The new system means that voters would be permanently marked with marker pens that have inks that are not easily erasable, meaning a voter would only cast a ballot once and any other second attempt would easily be noticed and stopped by the commission.

Sierra Leone’s President Ernest Bai Koroma has again refused to sign a bill legalising abortion, saying it should be put to a referendum. It was unanimously passed by MPs in December, but Mr Koroma refused to sign it after protests by religious leaders.
