Bloated Register: EC's Confirms With Delay Tactics - LMVC

Charlotte Osei
Ibrahim Adjei, a leading member of Let My Vote Count (LMVC), has insisted that the Electoral Commission’s inability to disprove the evidence presented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the voter’s register is bloated makes the party’s claim more credible and factual. “…It is in the interest of the EC, nine weeks on since Dr. Bawumia provided that evidence to the EC, they are still keeping mute and Ghanaians know that because the EC has not been able to disprove this. They know that the evidence is factual, correct and that the integrity of it is crucial,” The Vice
presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has alleged that the country’s voter’s register contains names of about 76,000 Togolese. The Party insists the current register lacks credibility hence the need for the Electoral Commission to compile a new one. Speaking on The Big Issue, Ibrahim Adjei whose group has petitioned the United Nation’s over some brutalities meted on them by the Police, following a truncated protest to the Electoral Commission, queried why it has taken the EC such a long time to ‘act’ on the claims of the NPP.   “We want the EC to leave a legacy that under Charlotte Osei, 2016 was an election that we had a level playing ground whereby we can set the bar higher for the rest of Africa to follow,” he added.
Meanwhile, former Presidents Jerry Rawlings, J.A. Kufuor, former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II, Convention People’s Party (CPP), the Centre for Democratic Development, with the latest being the Catholic Bishops Conference. have all expressed their concern for a credible voters register.
