An increase in fees has led to the closure of the main campus of the Technical University of Mombasa following riots by students. A decision
to indefinitely close the university’s main campus was reached after a special senate meeting was held. In a
statement, the senate said the rioting students refused to be addressed
by the management hence the closure that has also ordered students to vacate the halls of residence and the university’s premises by 10am Monday. The Monday morning riots led to the destruction of
property around the university. A garbage collection truck belonging to the Mombasa County government was also burnt by the rioting students. Anti-riot police were deployed at the campus to deal with the unruly students. The students claimed they were not informed in advance of the raise in fees by the university management. However, in a statement signed by Vice-Chancellor Josphat Mwatelah said the Kwale and Lamu campuses have not been affected by the closure,
