Ghana: Prof. J.H. Kwabena Nketia celebrates and clocks 95 years today

Prof. J.H. Kwabena Nketia is 95 years old today. He is a World-renowned musicologist and composer. He was born on 22 June 1921 at Mampong in the Ashanti Region of Ghana (then known as the Gold Coast).
Professor Nketia among others, has held many positions to his credit.
  • He trained as a teacher at the Presbyterian Training College, Akropong Akwapin, 
  • He got appointed as Acting Principal at the Presbyterian Training College in 1952.
  •  At age 23, Prof. Nketia, got government scholarship to the University of London to study phonetics at the School of Oriental and African studies. 
  • In 1949 he went to Birkeck College, University of London, and Trinity College of Music, London
  • In 1958 he was the U.S.A., where he attended Columbia University,
  • He returned to the University of Ghana, Legon where he rose through the ranks from Senior Research Fellow (1962), to Associate Professor
  • He became a full professor in 1963. 
  • Two years later, he was appointed Director of the Institute of African Studies. Prof. 
  • Nketia is celebrated all over the world as renowned musicologist and composer 
  • He is to African music what Bartok is to Western music.      
Professor Nketia, according to africanchorus.org, is easily the most published and best known authority on African music and aesthetics. At 95, he is still able to walk, talk clearly and still write without aid.
