Professor Nketia among others, has held many positions to his credit.
- He trained as a teacher at the Presbyterian Training College, Akropong Akwapin,
- He got appointed as Acting Principal at the Presbyterian Training College in 1952.
- At age 23, Prof. Nketia, got government scholarship to the University of London to study phonetics at the School of Oriental and African studies.
- In 1949 he went to Birkeck College, University of London, and Trinity College of Music, London
- In 1958 he was the U.S.A., where he attended Columbia University,
- He returned to the University of Ghana, Legon where he rose through the ranks from Senior Research Fellow (1962), to Associate Professor
- He became a full professor in 1963.
- Two years later, he was appointed Director of the Institute of African Studies. Prof.
- Nketia is celebrated all over the world as renowned musicologist and composer
- He is to African music what Bartok is to Western music.
