Ghana: 57-yr-old visually impaired man wins Best Farmer award

Stephen Nyarko, a 57-year-old blind farmer, was adjudged best district farmer in the Asuogyaman district of the Eastern region. The prize was presented to Nyarko under the physically challenged category of the award scheme. He cultivates a four-acre maize farm, four acres of palm oil plantation, one acre cassava and
plantain farm and about 15 goats and 20 local fowls. His prize included two cutlasses, wellington boots, herbicides, a wheelbarrow and a spraying machine. Nyarko, a father of six, said he was motivated to go into farming instead of begging at the roadside to take care of his family.

 Meanwhile, speaking at the function, the Asuogyaman District director of Agriculture, Daniel Oduro appealed to Government to construct roads to farming communities. Fuseini Abubakar was adjudged over all best farmer with Rebecca Asantewa winning best female farmer in the region.
