Nigeria: Naked Ebonyi women hits streets in protest

A state of confusion took hold of the Nkwegu community in Ebonyi on Monday as over 200 women stripped naked and took to the streets in protest of the continued detention of their President General Ndubuisi Ekumankama. According to Punch, Ekumankama is alleged to have demolished a widow's house and has been kept under police custody since his arrest. Male officials are said to have been left perplexed by the strange protest, fearing that they may have been killed while attempting to stop the scores of women who were stripped from the waist up, Sun News Online has reported.

Ibekwe Abdallah, Police Commissioner within the State, confirmed that a team of policewomen had to be sent to the scene in order to calm the female protesters. “Our men who earlier got to the scene were repelled because of the sight of the nakedness of these women and we had to mobilise our policewomen, led by a female Assistant Commissioner of Police. Their action was unfortunate and shameful,” said Abdallah. No casualties however, have been reported in the matter.
