Prosecutor In Jail for Corruption

THE Choma Subordinate Court has sentenced an immigration officer to four years imprisonment with hard labour for corrupt practices involving K5,000. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) public relations manager Timothy Moono said in a statement that Magistrate Exnorbert Zulu found Jonathan Miyanda, 55, of house number S1011 Sha compound in Choma, guilty of engaging in corrupt practices contrary to the
Anti-Corruption Commission Act. Mr Moono said Miyanda, who was a public prosecutor at the Immigration Department, was arrested by the ACC on April 7, 2014 and charged with two counts of corrupt practices. In the first instance, Miyanda was charged with one count of corrupt practices by a public officer. It was alleged that Miyanda between April 1 and April 7, 2014, in Choma, being a public officer, corruptly solicited for K5, 000 and actually received K 1,000 from a named foreign national as an inducement or reward for himself to discontinue a case in which the named foreigner was charged with engaging in employment not stipulated on the work permit. Miyanda was said to have abused the authority of his office in the manner he instituted criminal proceedings against the foreign national without following laid down procedures. Mr Moono said Miyanda is now in prison to commence serving the four-year jail sentence.
