The New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region has accused the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating the arrest of its Regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako also known as Chairman Wontumi. They feel the strings are being pulled by the NDC to have Chairman Wontumi behind bars so they can bend the rules in the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.
The police have already indicated Chairman Wontumi was detained following allegations of assault leveled against him by Collins Amankwah, MP for Manhyia North. Some angry supporters who besieged the police command demanding his release also alleged that the arrest may have been orchestrated by President Mahama.
In a statement signed by the party’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, Samuel Pyne, the NPP said the arrest of Chairman Wontumi was “as a clear distraction move by the NDC to make gains in the limited registration exercise.”
The NPP thus cautioned all their party agents and officials assigned to the various registration centers to be vigilant whilst urging them to desist from acts of violence.
Below is the full NPP statement
The NPP in the Ashanti Region expresses our greatest surprise as to how some unseen hands are trying to manipulate the police service in getting the Regional Chairman, Benard Antwi Boasiako, Wontumi behind bars.
This, we see as a clear distraction move by the NDC to make gains in the Limited Registration Exercise.
We are therefore cautioning all party agents and officials who have been assigned to registration centers and other points all in connection with the registration exercise to stay at post and work diligently too.
Also, party supporters should show their solidarity to the cause of the party, but with caution not to embark on any actions that may lead to violence and that, they should stay assured that party leaders are in firm control of affairs.
Signed………. Samuel Pyne
