Virginia Wangari, 48, allegedly escaped from their compound a few days ago, before going back with a television crew to fetch her children. In a clip captured by Citizen TV, the husband was seen chasing journalists and neighbours who had come to Wangari's rescue. One neighbour said: "Her (Wangari's) gate is always closed. There was a time she asked me to bring her a house helper, but when I came later to check on them, the gate was locked. I knocked and knocked, but nobody opened, so I just left."
"The last time I saw her was in August… We don’t have access to her compound, so it’s hard to tell whether she’s in or not," said another neighbour. Gender-based violence is prevalent in the east African country, with a recent survey indicating that 42% of Kenyan women aged between 15 and 42 support being beaten by their husbands. Some of the justifications for beating were denying husband sex, burning food, neglecting children and arguing with husbands,
The Star reported.
