The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region have asked ‘Voltarians’ not to gamble with the destiny of the region. They said the NDC was on course to achieving its ‘Operation one million votes gap’ agenda, and that the frequent visits of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders to the region would have no effect on the party’s chances in the region.
The Volta Regional Minister, Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, said with the development witnessed by the people under President Mahama’s administration, they were not perturbed about the efforts of the NPP to win supporters from the region.
No gambling of destiny Madam Ntoso asked, “If the President, John Mahama, is doing so well in terms of development for the region and other regions, why do we have to try somebody else who is begging us to try him,” adding, “Do we have to gamble with the destiny of this country?”
She was optimistic that the Volta Region would reward the party for the hard work the government had exhibited by helping it achieve its target in the region.
The minister was addressing party faithful at the Ho Bankoe E.P. JHS Park last Saturday after a health walk dubbed, ‘Operation 80,000 votes health walk in Ho Central’. Some national and regional executives of the NDC, the regional minister, the Ho Central MP, Mr Benjamin Kpodo, and some district chief executives walked through the principal streets of Ho to exercise and also canvass for votes.
“We are not disturbed or perturbed about what they are saying about the President and the economy,” she said, adding, “Don’t listen to someone calling on you to try him.” She appealed to the NDC supporters to remain focused and not be discouraged but keep supporting the NDC and President Mahama, adding, “Victory will surely come.”
The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Koku Anyidoho, stated that the government had experienced difficult times but the region was better off under the NDC than the NPP. He said a statement from the NPP Chairman, Mr Peter Amewu, that the people of the region were wise and, therefore, had bought their message should be disregarded because “the people of the region have been wise all these years for voting for the NDC because they believe in the party that brings them development’.
The National Organiser of the NDC, Mr Kofi Adams, added that the NDC was not threatened by the NPP’s frequent visits to its stronghold because “NDC is Volta Region and Volta Region is NDC”. “Why will the pattern change when a lot more development is being added to what already exists?
Volta Region did not have a university before the NDC came back to power. Today, the region can pride itself on having a university, asphalted roads, the Eastern Corridor road being done; a major bridge that connects the region to other regions having been refurbished and many other ongoing developments,” he said.
