Nairobi - Kenyan opposition coalition CORD has been ordered to pay KES 250 000 for using Uhuru Park for its demonstrations against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Monday. According to the Nairobi County Acting Secretary Robert Ayisi, CORD held an unauthorised rally at the Park on Monday June 6.
The opposition had been holding weekly demonstrations against the electoral commission, which it accused of being biased. The Star reported that on Monday, the coalition made a brief stop-over at the park before proceeding to the IEBC headquarters for a peaceful demo.
It was also reported that the coalition did not pay for the venue on June 1 when they led their supporters in a parallel Madaraka Day rally. Police had sealed off the venue after it emerged that it had been double-booked by a religious group, in a move seen as effort to counter the opposition rally.
However, they were cleared by the High court and the County Governor who said the venue was reserved for CORD. CORD had been directed to settle the fee by the close of business Thursday.
