Dr Bawumia received a rapturous reception from the Muslims and well-wishers of the Islamic faith as well as NPP supporters when he arrived in the gold city to pray for peace ahead of the impending general election in November this year.
The huge crowd that mobbed him demonstrated the NPP’s strength in the mining city and gave a big boost to its leader, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The streets of the Antobuasi area and the market square were filled with stirringly rejuvenated young people in a matter of minutes when news of the NPP running mate’s arrival got to them.
The market women, in unison, yelled: “Change is coming, change is coming, change is coming,” as they jostled each other to shake hands with Alhaji Bawumia. Dr Bawumia, in a short speech, said he had come to Obuasi to ask for prayers to be said for the nation since Ghana needed peace now that election mode had been activated.
“We need peace, comfort, and economic freedom in the country. All of us know that Ghana is a little bit hot today. There is an intolerable level of hardship. Let’s pray for it to ease,” he stated. According to him, hardship has no respect for political affiliation or colour, adding that it was incumbent on all and sundry to pray for better living conditions to prevail in the country.
He again asked for prayers to be said for the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, noting that the opposition leader meant well for the nation and its development. “We will all see the benefit of good leadership when Nana Akufo-Addo becomes the President of our country. He means well for Ghana and has good things under his sleeves for the nation. This is why I am asking you to pray for him,” he explained.
Dr Bawumia asserted that Nana also had the development of the Zongo communities at heart, and as a result, had pledged to establish a Zongo Development Fund to cater for the development gap existing in the various Zongo communities across the country, pointing out that the plan was an innovative idea from the visionary leader.
He called for support for his bid to become Vice President of the Republic, positing that he was also a true son of the north like President John Mahama.
“As he [referring to President Mahama] requested you to support him during the 2012 electioneering campaign as one of your own, so am I also calling on you to do the same thing for me this time round to become the Vice President. I’m also one of you; true son of the north,” he stressed.
The NPP running mate donated four bags of rice, three bags of sugar and two cartons of milk each to members worshipping at the two mosques, and also made a cash donation of GH¢5,000 towards the ongoing construction of a mosque at Tutuka. He used the opportunity to introduce the NPP parliamentary candidates for Obuasi East and West constituencies, Dr Boakye Yiadom and Kwaku Kwarteng respectively, who accompanied him.
